Actually, for all those holidays when you give gifts in Israel, you could emulate the "Yankee Christmas."
That's when every member of a family (usually of an extended family) draws the name of another family member out of a hat.
Then each person buys a present only for the person whose name he drew. That way, you buy a gift for only one person, but you can make it a really nice gift. You save on money and stress, and everyone looks forward to getting his gift just the same.

Your discussion brought back a lot of memories. As an only child and a lone soldier with really bad vision, I was not supposed to be in a combat unit. But when I finished my medic training, I was placed in a special unit that patrolled the streets of Hebron. A week after I got there, the second Intifadah broke out. My parents threatened to sue the army, and I was reassigned to a pathetic regional infirmary. I'm still bitter about it nine years later. Considering that I was 22 at the time, I find it ridiculous that I still needed a permission slip.
Even though when I was in then IDF girls couldn't become combat soliders as an only child and lone soldier I need my parents' permission to serve on the Golan. Even though I was 21 and had already lived away from home for more than 2 years.
When the Army asked if I had permission I answered, truthfully, 'yes' forgetting to add that it was only verbal. I think they assumed the paperwork was 'lost' in a file somewhere. Eventually my parents visited me and actually signed when I was more than have way through my service.
Although my mother had plenty of reasons to hesitate she'd realised long before that I wouldn't stand to be wrapped in cotton wool.
The loss of Assaf Ramon is heartbreaking but I think his mum made the right decision.

PS Taking a total left turn - Carol, have you seen the interview with Ilan Ramon from after the Osirak bombing? It was kept secret for years but shown on TV after his death. Wow :0)
